Los trapos empapados en aceite constituyen un peligro de combustión espontánea porque, al oxidarse el aceite, se libera calor. Si el calor no se disipa, puede acumularse e inflamar los trapos. Los trapos empapados en disolvente no suponen un riesgo de combustión espontánea, pero pueden ser un riesgo de incendio, ya que muchos disolventes son inflamables.
