  1. One in three of 19,000 Canadian nurses polled said problems with their physical health had made it challenging to handle their workloads. Back pain was the most common complaint.
  2. Nearly nine percent of Canadian nurses of both sexes reported suffering depression
  3. Seventeen percent of Canadian nurses interviewed reported that psychological strain from their jobs had caused them to take no fewer than 20 sick days within a year.
  4. Twenty-nine percent of nurses polled said they had been targets of physical abuse by patients within the past year.
  5. More than 40 percent reported being emotionally abused by patients.
  6. Forty-five percent of female nurses and 51 percent of male nurses reported feeling unsupported by their co-workers. However, 90 percent said their working relationships with doctors were good.
